PNP says cops exercised maximum tolerance during anti-Pax Silica protest

The Philippine National Police on Friday said its personnel exercised maximum tolerance in handling an anti-Pax Silica protest that disrupted the Luzon Economic Corridor Investment Forum in Taguig City on 10 September.

PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said police focused on maintaining order and ensuring the safety of those attending the event.

“The PNP exercised maximum tolerance during the incident. Our officers acted to maintain order and protect the safety of all participants at the forum,” Nartatez said.

Five protesters were arrested after cause-oriented groups staged a lightning rally at the Grand Hyatt Manila in Bonifacio Global City, where the forum was being held.

The Southern Police District said 43 police officers and five activists were injured as police and hotel security personnel moved to contain the protesters, some of whom briefly entered the hotel.

“We regret that injuries were sustained, but we will ensure that our response is reviewed and that proper procedures were followed,” Nartatez said.

He said the SPD had been directed to ensure that injured police personnel receive proper medical attention, particularly those who sustained head injuries.

Nartatez said the PNP recognizes the right of groups to express their concerns but stressed that protests must remain within the bounds of the law.

“The right to protest is respected, but it must be conducted peacefully and within the bounds of the law. We urge cause-oriented groups to raise their concerns through lawful means and avoid actions that endanger public safety,” he said.

The protest targeted the proposed U.S.-backed Pax Silica initiative, which supporters say could provide economic opportunities and strengthen the country’s role in the global artificial intelligence industry, while critics have raised concerns over the proposal.
