Melai Cantiveros has revealed that she and husband Jason Francisco quietly went through a six-month separation before ultimately finding their way back to each other, describing the difficult chapter as a lesson in love, respect and faith.
Speaking on the online show Hello Outside World, the actress shared that they intentionally kept the separation private.
“I’m opening up about this here for the first time so people will realize that a relationship isn’t something you end immediately after every fight. There came a time when we truly separated, but no one knew about it.”
Melai disclosed that they lived separately for six months while maintaining respect for one another, especially as parents to their children.
“Because we respected each other. He is Mela’s father, and I am Mela’s mother, so we couldn’t destroy each other because we share love for one another. We really separated. For six months, we didn’t live in the same house. This is the first time I’m telling this publicly,” she said.
She recalled that the first step toward reconciliation happened during a family movie outing, when they decided to give their relationship another chance.
“We talked about it at the movie theater while we were with our child. He told me, ‘Let’s try to work things out because our child needs both of us.’”
That conversation eventually led them back to each other.
“So we got back together. We realized that our connection was still there, and we fell in love with each other again. In fact, we fell even more deeply in love because of everything we went through," she said.
For Melai, the experience proved that enduring relationships are built not on a life free from conflict, but on mutual respect and a shared commitment to overcome challenges together.
“When you go through the eye of the needle and make it to the other side, that’s when you know it’s real. We owe it all to God.”
She added that while love can grow and deepen over time, respect must always remain constant.
“Love is always there, and it can continue to grow. But respect for each other never disappeared.”
