Former Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez is now at the Quezon City Jail in Barangay Payatas after the Sandiganbayan on Monday ordered his commitment.

In a statement, the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) confirmed the commitment of Romualdez, who is facing plunder charges related to P7.2 billion in alleged kickbacks from flood control projects.

"The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) confirms the commitment of Rep. Martin Romualdez to the Quezon City Jail–Male Dormitory at approximately 10:49 PM on 14 September 14, 2026, in compliance with the Order of the Sandiganbayan Third Division," the BJMP statement read, as sent by Jail Supt. Jayrex Bustinera to the Daily Tribune.

"Considering his medical needs and the medical recommendations presented before the Court, Rep. Romualdez has been placed in the jail infirmary together with other PDL requiring medical monitoring," the BJMP added.

Bustinera said the arrangement is in accordance with BJMP policies and the court’s directives to ensure that Romualdez' "continuing medical needs are properly attended to."

The Leyte congressman had been in a hospital since his arrest, first at Cardinal Santos Medical Center and then at the Philippine General Hospital.

"The BJMP assures the public that it will remain professional, impartial, and consistent in the implementation of its rules and regulations. All PDL under its custody are treated fairly and humanely, without distinction or privilege based on status or position," the BJMP said.

The graft court, on the other hand, has set the pretrial of Romualdez's case for Wednesday, 16 September 2026.
