There is something extraordinary happening wherever Alex Eala plays.
Whether in the US, London, Germany and now Canada, television cameras inevitably pan to the crowd draped in Philippine flags. One hears chants of “Let’s go, Alex!” echoing through arenas thousands of kilometers from home.
The organizers of the National Bank Open had to put her in center court to accommodate a bigger crowd after tickets immediately sold out. They even had adobo and lumpia for sale and not just to Filipinos.
For many observers, it has been phenomenal. For Filipinos, it has been inspiring.
Tennis is a sport where spectators show restraint, politely applauding between points and maintaining silence during rallies. Loud celebrations are for championship moments. Only the sport’s biggest superstars — Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Serena Williams, and more recently Carlos Alcaraz and Coco Gauff — draw passionate support around the world.
Now, Alex Eala is beginning to enjoy the same kind of following.
What makes it even more remarkable is that the overwhelming majority of her supporters are not locals. They are Filipinos who travel from neighboring cities and even countries to watch her play. Overseas Filipino workers, students, professionals, and families proudly wear the Philippine colors, wave flags, and cheer every point as though they represent the entire nation on that court.

We saw it with Manny Pacquiao in boxing. We witnessed it whenever Hidilyn Diaz, Carlos Yulo and our Olympians competed. Today, Alex Eala is bringing that same sense of national pride to a sport where the Philippines has never before enjoyed global prominence.
Her success is also expanding the horizons of young Filipinos. For decades, basketball has dominated our sporting imagination. Tennis was viewed as an expensive sport, inaccessible, with few Filipino role models. Alex is changing all that. Every victory encourages another child to pick up a racket. Every tournament introduces tennis to Filipinos who had never followed the sport.

Hearing familiar voices cheering from the stands boosts one’s confidence during pressure-filled moments, reminding our athletes that they never compete alone.
Alex Eala’s greatest legacy may ultimately extend beyond titles and rankings. She is cultivating a new generation of Filipino tennis fans and inspiring unprecedented support for a sport once considered foreign to many of us.
Every Philippine flag waving in those international stadiums tells the same story. Wherever a Filipino dares to dream on the world’s biggest stage, fellow Filipinos will find a way to be there.
And perhaps that is Alex’s most remarkable victory of all — not just winning matches, but bringing an entire nation into the stands.
