A couple of star-struck fans, including an octogenarian, shared their experiences during Alex Eala’s rare meet-and-greet event last Wednesday at the Glorietta Activity Center in Makati City.
For 12-year-old Danelei Caday, an aspiring tennis player herself, seeing Eala felt surreal as she was able to meet her idol face-to-face.
Fans made the most of the opportunity to meet world No. 28 Eala at the event backed by Globe, one of her major supporters.
“I felt starstruck. I was at a loss for words,” Caday said.
“I was happy because this has been my dream. This is a great opportunity for me.”
Eala not only inspired young fans but also older supporters who have followed her journey along with thousands of other Filipinos.
After waiting for Eala since 10 a.m., 80-year-old Dusty Mallillin said it was all worth it as he was also given the opportunity to speak with the tennis sensation.
“She told me she’s gonna try again. She was happy when I said, ‘I hope you will get to the top,’” said Mallillin, who traveled from Antipolo City to catch a glimpse of Eala.
“She was happy when I said that and told me that she would try her best.”
Eala is currently in Manila for a much-needed break after her historic Wimbledon Championships campaign, where she became the first Filipino to reach the Round of 16 in the women’s singles.
She is set to fly to the United States, where she will compete in the Washington Open starting on 27 July.
