Veteran talent manager Shirley Kuan has finally addressed the controversy linking her to the scrapped Spain wedding plans of Bea Alonzo and Vincent Co, firmly rejecting claims that she had anything to do with the decision.

During an intimate conversation with select members of the entertainment press in Quezon City on August 24, Kuan opened up about the issue as she also discussed the end of her six-year professional partnership with Alonzo.

Kuan said she had kept quiet for months despite being dragged into reports surrounding the couple’s original wedding plans. She explained that when stories began pointing to her as someone who supposedly interfered, she reached out directly to Alonzo.

According to Kuan, the actress initially preferred that she refrain from publicly addressing the matter to prevent the controversy from escalating. Out of respect for her then-talent, Kuan said she followed that request.

But as speculation continued, Kuan admitted that being repeatedly portrayed as the person responsible for the canceled wedding became increasingly difficult to accept.

“Why am I supposed to be the villain?” she asked.

Kuan said she eventually sought a direct answer from Alonzo herself when they spoke on August 11, the same day their manager-talent relationship came to an end.

She recalled asking Alonzo point-blank whether she was responsible for the cancellation of the Spain wedding. According to Kuan, Alonzo answered, “No. Hindi.”

Kuan said she went further, asking whether she had ever advised Alonzo—even jokingly—to call off the wedding. She claimed the actress again denied that this had ever happened, answering, “No, never.”

For Kuan, that conversation was enough to reinforce her position that she should not be blamed for what happened. She also maintained that she has evidence to support her account and challenged those making accusations against her to substantiate their claims.

A professional partnership comes to an end

Beyond the wedding controversy, Kuan also revealed what ultimately pushed her to end her working relationship with Alonzo after six years.

She cited an event that she had personally helped secure for the actress as the final turning point. Kuan claimed that despite arranging and closing the engagement, she later learned that she had been disinvited.

While she chose not to identify the event, Kuan said the situation left her deeply offended, especially because she believed she had done nothing to warrant such treatment.

When she informed Alonzo of her decision to step down as her manager on August 11, Kuan recalled the actress asking, “How, how did it come to this?”

Kuan indicated that her decision was not based on a single incident alone. She said she had also been carrying the frustration of feeling that she was left to face accusations without being sufficiently defended.

Despite the difficult ending to their professional partnership, Kuan stressed that she does not want to stand in the way of Alonzo’s personal happiness.

“Let them be happy. Ayaw kong maging… ayaw ko nga maging kontrabida,” she said.

Kuan and Alonzo worked together for six years before officially parting ways on August 11. Their professional split became public on August 23.

With Kuan now putting her version of events on record, attention may turn to whether Alonzo will eventually address her former manager’s statements and offer her own account of the issues surrounding the end of their longtime partnership.
