Long before it became one of OPM’s most enduring anthems, “Hawak Kamay” was simply a heartfelt message from a 14-year-old girl hoping someone she loved would find their way home.

Singer-songwriter Yeng Constantino revealed that the song was born from a deeply personal experience involving a cousin whom their family had welcomed into their home. She shared that she had always dreamed of growing up with a younger sibling, making the bond with her cousin especially meaningful.

When her cousin eventually left to search for their biological family, Yeng was devastated. The pain of that separation inspired her to write “Hawak Kamay” as a promise that no matter what happened, she would always be there with open arms if they ever returned.

Looking back, the Pop Rock Royalty admitted she still finds it remarkable that she was able to put such emotions into words at such a young age. At the time, she never imagined the deeply personal composition would resonate with millions of Filipinos and become a song associated with hope, comfort, and unwavering support.

Yeng also credited “Hawak Kamay” for opening the doors that changed her life. The song helped showcase her songwriting talent before she eventually emerged as the first-ever Grand Star Dreamer of Pinoy Dream Academy in 2006, a milestone she still describes as surreal whenever she looks back on it.

Even after nearly two decades in the industry, Yeng said she continues to be humbled by the way God surprises her career, especially as “Hawak Kamay” remains relevant across generations.

This year, the award-winning artist celebrates her 20th anniversary in music with her “Biyaheng Bente” concerts on Aug. 28 and 29 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, followed by a Cebu stop on Sept. 20. Fans can also look forward to a nostalgic reunion as the original Pinoy Dream AcademySeason 1 batch shares the stage once again for a special concert at the Music Museum on Sept. 19.
