CATBALOGAN CITY – Government troops unearthed a hidden arms cache of the communist New People’s Army in the hinterlands of Barangay Osmeña, Las Navas, Northern Samar on 26 October 2026.

The 8th Infantry Division said the arms cache, consisting of two M16 rifles and one anti-personnel mine (APM) was found by soldiers of the 19th Infantry (Commando) Battalion based on information provided by a former member of the Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee (EVRPC) who surrendered to the government.

“The recovery of the explosive device prevented it from potentially being used to threaten the safety and security of local communities,” the 8ID said in a statement.

“The successful recovery underscores the importance of community cooperation and the willingness of former CTG members to provide information that can help authorities locate concealed weapons and prevent these from being used to threaten the safety and security of communities,” it added.

The 8ID noted that the APM found is banned under the international humanitarian law and prohibited under the 1997 Ottawa Convention on Anti-Personnel Mines.

Lieutenant Colonel Roger Gobway Jr., Commanding Officer of the 19th Infantry Battalion, commended the informant for choosing to abandon the armed struggle and cooperate with the government.

“His decision to reveal the location of the hidden arms cache demonstrates that choosing peace can make a meaningful contribution in protecting our communities. We encourage other CTG members to follow his example, return to their families, and take advantage of the opportunities available through the government’s reintegration programs,” Gobway said.

Meanwhile, the 8th Infantry Division emphasized that sustained cooperation among security forces, local government units, and communities remains essential in addressing insurgency and achieving lasting peace in Eastern Visayas.

“Peace and security are shared responsibilities. Through mutual trust, cooperation, and the active participation of our communities, we can prevent violence, protect lives, and create an environment conducive to stability and socio-economic development,” the Division said.

8ID said its troops will remain committed in protecting communities and working with government partners and stakeholders toward a peaceful, secure, and progressive Eastern Visayas.

“Our troops will remain steadfast in conducting focused and sustained operations against the remaining CTG members. However, we continue to provide opportunities for those who wish to lay down their arms and rebuild their lives peacefully. We encourage them to make the right decision, reunite with their families, and embrace the opportunity to become productive members of society,” the Division added.

The 8ID also urged remaining CTG members to abandon the armed struggle and avail themselves of the government’s assistance and programs to include the amnesty programs for former rebels.
