CATBALOGAN CITY, Samar — Government troops recovered a high-powered firearm and an improvised explosive device following another encounter with suspected New People's Army (NPA) rebels in Barangay Capotuan, Las Navas, Northern Samar, on Sunday, 18 October.

The firefight, which lasted several minutes, was the fourth reported armed encounter in Las Navas this month, raising concerns over attempts by communist rebels to regain influence in remote communities.

The Philippine Army's 8th Infantry Division (8ID) said troops were conducting joint focused military operations when they encountered armed men believed to be remnants of the NPA's Sub-Regional Committee Emporium.

The rebels reportedly withdrew toward a mountainous area after the exchange of gunfire, leaving behind a squad automatic rifle, an improvised explosive device, ammunition and other war materials.

The latest encounter followed a similar clash in the same village in June, when government troops confronted rebels allegedly attempting to reestablish their presence in the community.

Las Navas Mayor John Philbert Tan appealed to remaining NPA members to surrender and return to civilian life.

Tan assured residents, particularly those in remote villages, that the municipal government was coordinating with the military and police to maintain peace and security.

Brig. Gen. Carmelito Pangatungan, commander of the 803rd Infantry Brigade, said Sunday's operation was intended to protect communities from possible harassment and threats.

“Our troops acted promptly to protect the people of Las Navas. We are thankful to the residents who continue to trust and cooperate with us. Peace is only possible when the community and the Army work hand in hand,” Pangatungan said.

The military vowed to sustain operations against remaining armed groups in the province.

“We will not stop our focused military operations until every remaining CTG member is captured or has surrendered. Our troops will continue to pursue them relentlessly to ensure that communities can live free from fear and violence,” Pangatungan added.

The 8ID reiterated its commitment to ending the communist insurgency in Eastern Visayas, urging remaining rebels to surrender and avail themselves of government reintegration programs.

The Army said coordinated military operations and cooperation with local governments and communities would remain central to its efforts to restore peace and stability in conflict-affected areas.
