A labor organization on Thursday welcomed the Supreme Court’s unanimous ruling directing Congress to comply with the 1987 Constitution’s mandate to enact a law prohibiting political dynasties.

Federation of Free Workers (FFW) president Sonny Matula urged lawmakers to act on the ruling.

“Aksyon na at ipasa ngayon na!” Matula said.

The labor leader likened the delay in passing an anti-dynasty law to workplace rules, noting that workers can face sanctions for being late while the legislation has remained pending for decades.

“Sa manggagawa, ilang minutong late, may memo agad. Ang anti-dynasty law, halos apat na dekada nang late. Kongreso, mag-time in na!” he added.

The FFW said political monopolies could weaken accountability and create opportunities for corruption.

“Kapag magkakamag-anak ang may kontrol, sino ang magbabantay—ang pinsan o kapatid?” Matula said.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday unanimously granted petitions seeking to compel Congress to act on the constitutional provision against political dynasties.

Matula also expressed support for anti-dynasty measures filed by Akbayan Party-list Rep. Jose Manuel “Chel” Diokno and Senator Risa Hontiveros.

According to Matula, the proposals cover spouses and relatives up to the fourth civil degree, including first cousins, and seek to restrict simultaneous officeholding and immediate family succession in covered positions.
