What if your worst night in New York became your best love story?
A first date can go wrong in a hundred ways. A first date in New York, on the one night when singles across the city are looking for something casual, can go spectacularly wrong.
That is the setup for One Night Only, the new romantic comedy from filmmaker Will Gluck.
The film follows Allie, played by Academy Award nominee Monica Barbaro, and Owen, portrayed by Callum Turner, two strangers who meet under circumstances that should make a simple night together fairly easy. Instead, the evening quickly turns into a citywide chase filled with wrong turns, unexpected detours and missed connections.
Owen is nursing the wounds of a recent breakup, while Allie still believes there might be something real to find amid the city’s seemingly endless supply of fleeting encounters. When they meet, there’s an immediate connection but getting them to the same place at the same time proves to be another matter.
Rather than staying in one romantic setting, One Night Only turns New York into part of the story. The pair spend the night moving through a city that seems determined to keep throwing obstacles in their way, creating a romantic comedy built around the chaos, coincidence and bad timing that can come with trying to find someone.
For Gluck, the film marks another return to the genre after Easy A and Anyone but You. This time, however, the familiar rom-com formula gets a particularly modern twist: two people who want more than a casual encounter trying to figure out whether fate — or simply a series of increasingly ridiculous circumstances — is bringing them together.
Barbaro and Turner lead a cast that includes Maya Hawke, Julia Fox, King Princess, Ziwe and Ben Marshall, with Molly Ringwald and LeVar Burton also joining the lineup.
The film is directed and co-written by Gluck, based on a script by Travis Braun. Gluck also produces through Olive Bridge Entertainment alongside Jacqueline Monetta.
