A worthwhile true story about war and football loses some of its force when its camera fails to capture the action and reactions that matter most.
Based on a true story set in Basilan, Hand of God enters a conflict-scarred Muslim community where the seemingly endless war between government soldiers and the NPA has shaped everyday life. At its center is a soldier (Ruru Madrid) who turns to community work, using football to give children an alternative to armed conflict and keep them from the pull of the NPA. It is a compelling premise that allows the film to examine both the persistence of war and the possibility of sports as a means of intervention.
What makes Mark Duane Angos' Hand of God worthwhile is its commitment to reality. Rather than romanticizing its subject, the film presents a tragic portrait of a community caught within a conflict that seems to have no end. The message comes through clearly, and the performances are solid, with the cast giving the material the necessary credibility.
The problem, however, lies in the cinematography — specifically the camera work. This is not a criticism of the color palette, lens choices or visual style. The issue is that the camera does not consistently capture the moments that should generate the film’s greatest impact. Cinema is visual storytelling, and the camera must do more than record an event or establish an aesthetic. It must bring the viewer into the experience.
That becomes particularly apparent during the football sequences. Sports inherently carry movement, tension and anticipation, yet the camera does not always provide the necessary thrill. Critical action, reactions and shifts in momentum are often not captured with enough immediacy. There are moments when a character’s reaction — Ronnie Lazaro’s, for instance — should become a crucial emotional entry point, but the camera does not move toward him when it matters.
The result is an unusual disconnect: the story can be understood without necessarily being felt. The film tells its story effectively, but its visual execution does not always translate the dramatic circumstances into a visceral cinematic experience. Even when the outcome is apparent, the audience should still feel the tension of getting there.
Hand of God remains a good film with a significant subject and capable performances. Its weakness is not what it wants to say but how its camera captures what happens on screen. For a story with this much tragedy, conflict and human possibility, it needed images that could make the audience feel the force of what it already understands.
