Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon conducted a series of project inspections in Ilocos Norte on Friday, Aug. 7, checking ongoing infrastructure and flood mitigation efforts in several municipalities.

Dizon began the inspection tour in Piddig, where he reviewed the progress of the Loing–Mangitayag Bridge project before proceeding to Paoay and Batac City.

In Barangay Cayugug, Paoay, Dizon inspected dredging and desilting operations aimed at improving the capacity of a flood-prone creek. Local residents said the waterway had frequently overflowed during prolonged heavy rains due to accumulated silt, logs, and debris, affecting nearby roads.

Engineers briefed Dizon on the ongoing clearing operations and discussed how restoring the creek's capacity could help reduce flooding in the area.

The DPWH chief also inspected another infrastructure project in Batac City, where he received updates from engineers, contractors, and local officials regarding construction progress and timelines.

During the inspection, Dizon wore field attire and focused discussions on technical matters, including construction schedules, drainage capacity, and project implementation.

Meanwhile, Dizon declined to comment on the National Bureau of Investigation's disclosure of an alleged plot involving him and other senior government officials in a supposed fabricated sex and human trafficking scandal.

Authorities earlier said the alleged scheme was intended to damage the reputations of Dizon, Executive Secretary Ralph Recto, Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla, Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla, Cabinet Secretary Benhur Abalos, and Information and Communications Technology Secretary Henry Aguda.

Dizon opted not to discuss the allegations and instead continued with the inspection activities.

The DPWH secretary's Ilocos Norte visit covered several ongoing projects, including bridge construction, flood control measures, and other infrastructure works. The agency said the impact of these projects will ultimately be measured by their completion and their ability to improve public safety and accessibility in affected communities.
