The Philippine National Police (PNP) is strengthening coordination with other law enforcement agencies to identify and dismantle the syndicate behind the seizure of P980 million worth of smuggled cigarettes in Cebu.
PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the intensified effort is in line with the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla to strengthen the government's campaign against smuggling.
"We will continue to work with other law enforcement agencies to dismantle illegal tobacco operations in the country as we strive to protect legitimate businesses and the national economy," Nartatez said.
The shipment was intercepted during a joint operation by the PNP and the Bureau of Customs on 2 July at a private wharf in Mandaue City.
Authorities seized the illicit tobacco products from 25 20-foot container vans.
"This will be an inter-agency investigation intended to unmask all those responsible for the smuggling attempt and to file the necessary charges against them," Nartatez said.
He said investigators have been directed to identify those responsible for financing, transporting, storing and distributing the contraband.
Nartatez also ordered police units to strengthen coordination with the Bureau of Customs and other government agencies to ensure that everyone involved in the smuggling operation is held accountable.
He further directed police units to intensify monitoring of private wharves following the seizure, saying law enforcement agencies must remain vigilant against attempts by smugglers to use private ports and other entry points for illegal activities.
