SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union — The Provincial Government of La Union is intensifying efforts to strengthen the province’s goat industry, positioning it as a potential source of livelihood for farmers.

Through the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian, the province rolled out initiatives aimed at increasing awareness and market opportunities for goat production, a key segment of the local livestock sector. A recent showcase at the San Fernando City Plaza featured 17 pairs of goats from different municipalities.

Provincial Veterinarian Dr. Domingo Bobby C. Calub III said the activity aimed to highlight goat meat and breeding as viable income sources for rural communities. The event also sought to demonstrate the sustainability of goat raising as a small-scale enterprise.

The program was conducted in coordination with Municipal Agriculture Offices, which assisted in selecting quality livestock, locally referred to as mekmek. The showcase adopted a parade-style presentation to draw public attention to the industry.

Entries from Naguilian were cited for livestock quality, while raisers from Balaoan, Santol, and Tubao also placed among the top participants.

Governor Mario Eduardo C. Ortega said agriculture and livestock remain priorities in the province’s development agenda. The provincial government continues to support farmers through promotional events and technical assistance.

Officials said similar activities will be sustained to help connect producers with markets and encourage wider participation in goat raising.
