The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) rescued a missing fishing boat crew member in waters off Silanguin Island, Zambales, on Christmas Day.
According to the PCG, FBCA Gavin crew member Larry Tumalis boarded a small boat and departed from the mother boat on 24 December, to conduct fishing operations in the vicinity waters off Silanguin Island.
The fishing vessel later navigated to another buoy, but when the crew returned to Tumalis’ last known location, he was nowhere to be found. After two hours of searching, the crew decided to return to the area and wait until the following day to resume search efforts.
Despite continued attempts, the missing crew member was not immediately located.
The PCG said it received a distress call on the morning of Christmas Day and promptly deployed BRP Cape San Agustin (MRRV-4408) to conduct search and rescue operations. At around 2:15 p.m., the PCG successfully located Tumalis.
Personnel from the Coast Guard Nursing Service and the Coast Guard Medical Service immediately rendered Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Services (MHPSS) and conducted a health assessment to ensure the rescued crew member’s overall well-being.
The crew of FBCA Gavin and Tumalis’ family were subsequently informed of his successful rescue, with authorities confirming that he was found to be in good condition.
BRP Cape San Agustin safely turned Tumalis over to the mother boat, FBCA Gavin.
The PCG reiterated its commitment to saving lives, safeguarding Philippine waters, and ensuring maritime safety at all times.
