President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said he is studying the possibility of extending the tenure of Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Rommel Francisco Marbil to “at least until after the elections.”
Marcos made the comment during a media interview in Taguig City on Monday.
“Well, there is a very strong argument that it would not be good for stability, especially to change the chief PNP in the middle of a campaign period and approaching an election period,” Marcos told reporters.
He emphasized the importance of ensuring continuity in leadership during the election period.
“So we are studying it, but I think that is probably a very strong argument to keep him on. At the very least, until after the elections,” Marcos said.
Earlier, Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla hinted at Marbil’s extended term as police chief citing the elections as a factor.
Marbil took on the top PNP post in April 2024. He belongs to Philippine Military Academy Sambisig Class of 1991.
