The critically acclaimed Filipino film Balota, starring Marian Rivera, is set to premiere on Netflix on 31 January.
The movie, which debuted at Cinemalaya 2024 and had a nationwide theatrical release in October with additional cuts, is now on the streaming platform with a maturity rating of 16+.
Described by Netflix as "provocative and gritty," Balota has already garnered significant attention for its intense and thought-provoking narrative.
Directed by Kip Oebanda, Balota tells the gripping story of a land-grabbing tycoon and a former male sexy actor locked in a heated battle for the mayoral seat in a small town. As violence escalates, Teacher Emmy, played by Marian Rivera, flees into the forest with a ballot box containing the critical election results.
Marian's portrayal of Teacher Emmy earned her her first-ever Best Actress award at the Cinemalaya Film Festival, an honor she shared with Gabby Padilla.
