PNP boosts nighttime patrols

The Philippine National Police (PNP) ordered an immediate increase in nighttime police patrols and community visibility Thursday following global survey results indicating lingering public safety concerns after dark.
The Philippines scored 84 out of 100 overall on the Gallup Law and Order Index, placing the country’s law and order situation on par with that of the United States and the United Kingdom.
PNP chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. commended frontline personnel for driving down national crime rates — particularly index crimes — but emphasized the need to address a specific survey finding showing that only 64 percent of Filipinos feel safe walking alone in their communities at night.
“The report is a reminder that maintaining peace and order is not measured by crime statistics alone,” Nartatez said.
“Our success must also be reflected in the confidence of every Filipino inside their home, in walking the streets and in moving around their communities without fear any time of the day,” he added.
Nartatez cited that the gap between low reported crime rates and public sentiment suggests that despite general confidence in law enforcement, personal security concerns persist after dark.
“This is why I am directing all police regional directors and local chiefs of police to reassess their nighttime deployment, intensify mobile and foot patrols, and strengthen police visibility in identified crime-prone areas,” Nartatez said.
“We must bring police presence closer to the communities and ensure that no area is overlooked, particularly during hours when people are most vulnerable,” he added.
Under the directive, regional and local police commanders must reevaluate patrol schedules and personnel distribution, focusing on high-risk locations and routes frequented by late-night commuters, workers, and students.
