CdO weighs EV taxi rollout vs local transport industry impact

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — The City Council’s Committee on Transportation will review the proposed introduction of Green GSM electric taxis in Northern Mindanao, focusing on protecting traditional taxi operators and drivers.
Councilor Enrico Salcedo said city officials aim to support sustainable transportation while ensuring existing public transport stakeholders are not displaced.
Before finalizing any recommendations, the committee plans to consult with the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, electric vehicle operators, local taxi associations, and other transport groups.
The proposed Green GSM deployment reflects a broader push toward electric transport across the country. However, local officials emphasized that any modernization effort must preserve jobs and promote fair competition within the industry.
Salcedo said the evaluation will determine how electric taxis can be integrated into Cagayan de Oro’s transit system while balancing the interests of commuters, drivers, operators, and the local economy.
