IIlocos Norte 2nd District Representative Angelo Marcos Barba is expanding sports programs in the district through initiatives in tennis, beach volleyball, and basketball as part of efforts to promote grassroots sports development and boost tourism.
Among the initiatives is the AMB Tennis Clinic, which provides free coaching and access to equipment for aspiring players. Barba has also launched the AMB Beach Volleyball Tournament, drawing participating teams and spectators to coastal venues across the province.
Organizers said the sporting events have also generated economic activity for local micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), with athletes, officials, and visitors contributing to increased business during competition days.
Barba's office has likewise continued to support basketball development across the district. This year, the Ilocos Norte 2nd District basketball team captured its league championship, a feat supporters attributed to sustained grassroots training and regular local competitions.
"Sports is more than competition. It builds discipline, creates livelihoods, and puts Ilocos Norte on the map as a sports tourism destination. We will keep investing in our athletes and in the venues that make them shine," Barba said.
Local sports officials said training clinics and tournaments help identify promising athletes while encouraging participants and visitors to explore Ilocos Norte's beaches, heritage sites, and other tourist destinations.
Barba said his office will continue supporting sports infrastructure, athlete development, and community sporting events as part of broader efforts to strengthen grassroots sports and promote tourism in Northern Luzon.
