The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on Friday reported it has successfully rescued 16 individuals from a distressed motor launch off the coast of Panamao, Sulu, after the vessel suffered engine failure and began drifting near Capual Island.

The Coast Guard Station (CGS) Eastern Sulu confirmed that 11 crew members and 5 passengers aboard motor launch NIESAH were safely rescued following a prompt search and rescue (SAR) operation last 15 October. 

The vessel was en route from Jolo, Sulu to Kawit, Zamboanga City when it reportedly struck floating debris, damaging its propeller and causing a total engine malfunction.

Upon receiving the distress call, CGS Eastern Sulu immediately mobilized SAR teams, who later located the vessel adrift near Gujangan Island, Panamao. The PCG safely towed NIESAH to Allayon Port in Luuk, Sulu, where all rescued individuals were reported to be in good health.

“This operation demonstrates our continued commitment to maritime safety and the protection of lives at sea, in line with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s vision,” the PCG said in a statement.

The PCG also acknowledged the swift coordination between Coast Guard units and the strong support of the local community, which played a crucial role in the success of the operation.

CGS Eastern Sulu emphasized the importance of vessel preparedness, regular maintenance, and community cooperation in responding to maritime emergencies. 

They urged vessel operators to conduct thorough safety checks before voyages and to remain vigilant while navigating through local waters.

The incident highlights ongoing challenges in maritime transport in the region and the vital role of the Coast Guard in ensuring safe passage across Philippine waters.
