Ivana Alawi recently hosted a thanksgiving party for the entertainment press, offering a glimpse into her life beyond the curated content she shares with millions. The event served as a platform for her to address recent controversies and reaffirm her unwavering spirit.
Alawi, born Mariam Sayed Sameer Marbella Al-Alawi on 25 December 1996, to a Filipino mother and Moroccan father, has carved a unique path in the entertainment industry. Her journey began with a foray into television, participating in the sixth season of GMA-7’s StarStruck in 2015. While she didn’t clinch the top spot, her talent and charisma earned her a place among the top 22 and a contract with GMA Artist Center.
Her career progressed with appearances in various television dramas. In 2018, she played Rina in ABS-CBN’s Precious Hearts Romances Presents: Araw Gabi, showcasing her acting prowess. The following year proved to be a pivotal one, with roles in Ang Probinsyano, her film debut in Open, and appearances in 3pol Trobol: Huli Ka Balbon! and Sino ang Maysala?: Mea Culpa. Her performance in the latter earned her the “Best New Female TV Personality” award at the 33rd PMPC Star Awards for Television, a testament to her growing recognition.
However, it was her foray into the digital realm that truly catapulted Alawi to unprecedented fame. Launching her self-titled YouTube channel in 2019, she quickly amassed a massive following, becoming the most subscribed Filipino celebrity on the platform. Google recognized her impact, awarding her the “Top YouTube Content Creator” in the Philippines for two consecutive years. Her content, known for its authenticity and engaging nature, resonated with audiences, solidifying her status as a digital powerhouse.
Beyond her online presence, Alawi has also ventured into the business world, establishing her own skincare brand, Ivana Skin, demonstrating her entrepreneurial drive.
Despite her success, Alawi hasn’t been immune to challenges. During the recent press event, she addressed her ongoing legal dispute with a jewelry endorsement, stating, “Nasa court po kami ngayon. Hindi ako pwede magbigay ng details mapapagalitan ako ng lawyer ko (laughs) (The case is in court now. I can’t give any details because my lawyer will get angry at me).” She also addressed rumors of an affair with Albee Benitez, following Ogie Diaz’s YouTube revelation, with Benitez issuing a public apology to clarify the situation. She also debunked rumors of having cancer, stating her mother was worried until she clarified it was fake news.
Alawi’s resilience shone through as she addressed the constant barrage of online criticism, stating, “Wala naman ako pakialam sa (I don’t care about) bashers ever since.”
Raised in Bahrain and inheriting her father’s estate after his passing in 2018, Alawi has faced personal trials alongside her public career. Her youngest sibling, Mona Alawi, is a former child actress. In October 2024, she was hospitalized due to polycystic ovary syndrome, reminding audiences of her human vulnerability.
Ivana Alawi’s story is one of ambition, adaptability, and an unwavering connection with her audience. From her early days in StarStruck to her current status as a digital icon and business owner, she continues to navigate the complexities of fame and fortune with a blend of grace and grit.
