Six years in the making, 9 Works Theatrical’s original Filipino musical, Liwanag sa Dilim, is finally ready to illuminate the stage.  Opening on 7 March at the RCBC Plaza in Makati City, this highly anticipated production features the iconic music of Filipino singer-songwriter Rico Blanco, with book and direction by Robbie Guevara.

Liwanag sa Dilim boasts a stellar cast of talented actors, including Jon Abella, Paji Arceo, Brianna Bunagan, Arnel Carrion, Denzel Chang, Chez Cuenca, Rita Daniela, Boo Gabunada, Neomi Gonzales, Derrick Gozos, Alexa Ilacad, Jasper Jimenez, Vien King, Rica Laguardia, Lani Ligot, Raul Montesa, CJ Navato, Nicole Omillo, Khalil Ramos, Anthony Rosaldo, Lucylle Tan, Mark Tayag and Iya Villanueva.

The musical marks the return of Mark Tayag to the stage after eight years. “It feels truly incredible to be back on stage for Liwanag Sa Dilim,” Tayag shared. “The collaborative process of bringing this original story to life, with Rico Blanco’s powerful compositions, is both exhilarating and humbling.”

Vien King, who recently appeared in 9 Works Theatrical’s Tick, Tick... Boom!, also expressed his excitement, calling it “a real blessing to bring Rico Blanco’s iconic songs to life.”  Khalil Ramos, another Tick, Tick... Boom! alum, echoed the sentiment, stating, “Now, a year and a half after my theater debut, I’m thrilled to return to the stage — this time with an incredible ensemble cast.”

The musical will showcase 23 of Blanco’s hits, spanning his diverse musical styles, from alternative and electronic to pop and progressive rock.

Director Robbie Guevara explained how Blanco’s music lends itself to storytelling: “His songs are not just fluffy songs. They all have meaning — personal to him, which can also be interpreted as something personal to me.”

Guevara also emphasized the musical’s relevance in the current socio-political climate of the Philippines. While clarifying that it’s not a political play, he acknowledged that Liwanag sa Dilim touches on themes that will encourage audiences to reflect on their role in society. “It’s important because, hopefully, it will make you question who you are in society and what you can do to make it better,” he said.

Actress Alexa Ilacad shared that her role has been more challenging than she initially anticipated. “Ibang klaseng hirap din siya (It’s a completely different kind of challenge)!” she admitted. She also expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to perform Blanco’s music. “Madaming kailangang bantayan, especially the songs of sir Rico Blanco. I don’t take it lightly talaga — it’s something that I value,” Ilacad said. “Binigyan ako ng platform na makanta ‘yung mga hits ng OPM legend natin na si sir Rico Blanco, so, of course, I want to be great.”

Liwanag sa Dilim promises to be a powerful and moving theatrical experience, blending the magic of Rico Blanco’s music with a compelling story and a talented cast. Theatergoers can expect a production that is both entertaining and thought-provoking, offering a fresh perspective on Blanco’s timeless hits.
