ILOILO CITY — Three emerging and established tourism destinations in Northern Iloilo are being assessed by the Department of Tourism-6 (DoT-6) for possible inclusion in the region’s ecotourism circuit.

The DoT-6, in coordination with the Regional Ecotourism Committee VI (REC VI), recently conducted site validation and assessment in Sitio Nagpana in Barotac Viejo, Pan de Azucar Island in Concepcion, and Isla Gigantes in Carles.

The assessment aims to determine whether the destinations comply with existing laws and ecotourism standards, as well as evaluate their potential for sustainable tourism development.

Following the site inspections, the assessment team held consultations with local stakeholders to discuss its findings and provide technical recommendations.

Among the areas identified for improvement were destination management, tourist reception and environmental protection.

Tourism sites that meet the prescribed standards and secure REC VI approval may qualify for inclusion in the Regional Ecotourism Circuit, which will serve as a guide for their promotion and marketing.

Inclusion in the circuit may also make these destinations eligible for additional support to further develop their tourism potential.

The initiative seeks to ensure that tourism development in Northern Iloilo is supported by proper management systems, visitor facilities and measures to protect the natural environment.
