DOLORES, Eastern Samar — Government troops recovered an assault rifle and ammunition during a follow-up operation at the site of an encounter with New People's Army (NPA) rebels that left two insurgents dead in Dolores, Eastern Samar.

The 52nd Infantry Battalion said soldiers recovered an abandoned M4 carbine rifle, 250 rounds of 5.56 mm ammunition, five magazines and a bandolier in Sitio Canrumbay, Barangay Jicontol, on 1 November 2026.

The recovery followed an armed encounter between government forces and suspected NPA members in the area on 31 October.

Lt. Col. Sandy Sereño, commander of the 52nd Infantry Battalion, said clearing operations were necessary to prevent abandoned weapons from being recovered and used in further attacks.

“The responsibility of our troops does not end with the conclusion of an encounter. We remain committed to conducting necessary follow-up operations to ensure that no firearms or war materiel are left behind that could potentially be recovered and used to threaten the safety of our communities. This successful recovery demonstrates our troops’ vigilance and unwavering commitment to protecting the people,” Sereño said.

The battalion said it would continue coordinating with local officials and communities to maintain security and prevent further armed violence in the area.
