ALICIA, Isabela — Empress Anika Caole played like a royalty as she topped the standard division for the U10 girls in the Philippine National Children’s Chess Championships at the Alicia Community Center here yesterday.
The nine-year-old Caole, who represented Luna, Apayao and trained by International Master Joel Banawa, showed her sweep of the standard, rapid and blitz golds in the National Age Group Championships in Olongapo last June was no fluke as she finished unbeaten in five matches on this one.
The feat earned Caole a spot to next year’s Eastern Asia Youth Championships at a still unspecified country.
Also topping their respective age classes were Labo, Camarines Norte’s Frexine Maria Lim (U8G), Zamboanga City’s Khana Kathrine Ventolero (U12G), Pasig’s Gael Adam Navarro (U8B), Makati’s Marco Piolo Sanido (U10B) and Antipolo’s John Randall Peralta (U12B).
This event was one of the five the host city under Mayor Atty. Joel Amos Alejandro with the other four being the Women’s Invitational, the National Juniors, the Youth Selection and the FIDE Classification tournaments.
