iQIYI’s new youth drama follows two gifted students whose friendship grows through school competitions, shared ambitions and the complicated journey toward adulthood.

Some love stories begin with grand gestures. In Genius Girlfriend, affection takes shape through problem-solving competitions, study sessions and the quiet comfort of having someone who understands how the mind works.

The coming-of-age drama is directed by Tian Yusheng, known for the Ex-Files film series and The Sacrifice, and written by Sun Qijun. It stars Tian Xiwei of New Life Begins and Pursuit of Jade, alongside Hu Yitian, best known for A Love So Beautiful and My Roommate Is a Detective.

At the center of the story is Lin Zhixia (Tian Xiwei), a gifted but reserved student whose direct personality and limited social skills have kept her from forming close friendships. Her life begins to change after she is admitted to Provincial No. 1 Middle School.

There, she meets Jiang Yubai (Hu Yitian), a sunny and accomplished student, during a problem-solving competition. Their first connection is rooted in intellectual competition, but the two soon become desk mates — setting the stage for a relationship built on contrast, curiosity and mutual respect.

While Lin is academically exceptional, Jiang is naturally sociable. His easygoing personality helps her navigate the unfamiliar rhythms of school life and introduces her to a circle of friends, including Tang Tingting (Li Jiaqi), Duan Qiyan (Xia Haoran), Shen Fuxuan (Lai Weiming) and Jin Baihui (Vivienne Tien).

In return, Lin helps Jiang with his studies. What begins as an exchange of strengths gradually develops into a genuine partnership.

Rather than rushing its central couple into a conventional romance, Genius Girlfriend places friendship at the heart of Lin and Jiang’s story. The official synopsis describes how the pair move from competitors to reliable allies, supporting each other through school activities, academic challenges and personal setbacks.
