The impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte is not only about accountability over alleged misconduct but also a political effort to block her path to the presidency in 2028, according to Kamanggagawa Partylist Rep. Eli San Fernando.
Speaking on DAILY TRIBUNE’s Impeachment Rundown program, San Fernando said the administration’s political calculations cannot be ignored.
“Let’s not fool ourselves. We know that the current administration wants to halt Vice President Sara on her campaign toward the presidency,” he said. “Surveys show that she is the strongest contender for the 2028 presidential elections.”
San Fernando argued that the administration has yet to produce a candidate capable of matching Duterte’s political strength.
“The administration has no one. Their only options are either to field a strong candidate to face VP Sara or do whatever they can to stop VP Sara,” he said.
