Fifty-seven overseas Filipino worker (OFW) applicants were rescued from suspected unregistered accommodation facilities in Parañaque City over the weekend, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) reported Tuesday.
The rescue and closure operation was conducted in coordination with the Migrant Workers Protection Bureau (MWPB), the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), and the Parañaque City Police District. It followed intensified surveillance operations targeting unscrupulous recruitment agencies in the city.
Following the rescue, the DMW-NCR conducted initial assessments and documentation of the OFW applicants. OWWA subsequently transferred them to a temporary accommodation facility, where they will receive appropriate assistance and support services.
“The protection of the rights and the promotion of the welfare of our OFWs are our paramount concerns,” Director Millar said, reiterating that the DMW-NCR remains committed to protecting aspiring OFWs, ensuring compliance with existing regulations, and promoting safe, orderly, and ethical labor migration.
Meanwhile, the DMW and the Sultanate of Oman agreed to strengthen cooperation to protect and promote the welfare of overseas Filipino workers during a bilateral meeting on July 26, held alongside the 3rd Oman-Philippines Investment Forum.
DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac and Undersecretary Jainal Rasul Jr. met with Oman Minister of Labor H.E. Mahad Said Ali Baawain and the Omani delegation to discuss safe and orderly labor migration, labor standards, and the implementation of the Philippines-Oman memorandum of understanding on the recruitment and deployment of Filipino workers.
The DMW thanked the Omani government for its labor reforms and for assisting Filipino seafarers affected by maritime incidents in the Strait of Hormuz.
Cacdac said the talks were guided by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s directive to protect Filipino migrant workers.
“I’m under the President’s instructions to make life easy for you and to discuss other areas of cooperation,” Cacdac told the Omani delegation.
The forum also featured discussions on investment and business opportunities, tourism and cultural cooperation, and labor and human capital development.
The DMW and Oman will continue working on measures to improve OFW protection and strengthen existing recruitment and deployment arrangements.
