To witness an artist reveal a more personal side of himself is always a refreshing diversion — a change of pace, a shift in tempo. While colors and textures, technique and style may first catch the eye, it is often the stories behind every canvas that leave a lasting impression.
Such is the invitation behind Intimate Reflections, the solo exhibition of Spencer Ozo, to be launched today, Tuesday, 28 July at the Gallery C of Conrad Manila.
Born and raised in Baguio City, the gentleman draws inspiration from the region’s culture and landscape, as he allows each composition to respond and react to his own experiences and emotions.
The display gathers 15 creations which mirror Spencer’s journey of self-discovery, as he blends abstraction and figuration into deeply personal narratives. Described as a visual diary, the collection explores identity, purpose and resilience — even the everyday moments which shape who we become.
For the self-taught artist, the exhibition began with the title — not with a brushstroke. “Conceptualizing the title was the first and most challenging step,” he shared. “I wanted it to embody my personal experiences and serve as a reflection of my work.”
He started painting in January, spending every single day off and more — pursuing the exhibition. Along the way, he experimented with approaches and hues he had never explored before, allowing each composition to share its very own tale — he has a wish to unlock his goal in a world filled with ambiguity and change. As he puts it, “Each piece represents a unique story, woven through these personal explorations and new expressions.”
Texture likewise plays an important role throughout his practice in acrylic paint and mixed media. Spencer particularly enjoys using a palette knife, which allows him to carve intricate patterns into modeling paste and create embossed surfaces. It certainly adds more depth and distinct character. One creation holds a special place in his heart. Dreaming of Osaka recalls cherished moments with his spouse in Japan’s culinary capital. “I have shared many beautiful moments in Osaka with my wife,” he reveals, adding that the painting symbolizes “those feelings of happiness and contentment.”
Outside the studio, the forever-busy, perpetually-on-the-go professional continues to balance creativity with hospitality as Front Office Manager of Conrad Manila, where he will assist in kickstarting the property’s curated 1/3/5 Moments guest experiences. Following the show, he begins a commissioned trio of large-format paintings for a modern Chinese-themed residence.
As a member of Art Group 360 Creatives, Spencer looks forward to more collaborative showcases around the metro. It is in a bid to gather established names and emerging talents who unite through a passion for meaningful creative expression.
As in all previous editions of Of Art and Wine, the affair is curated by Nes Jardin, consultant for SM Hotels and Conventions Corporation and the primary factor behind these rewarding undertakings, which has truly made available a welcoming space for both budding and esteemed artists.
Intimate Reflections runs from 28 July to 26 September at Gallery C, Level 3, Conrad Manila.
