Ten years ago, Sony looked at the chaotic hum of the modern world and decided we all needed a collective moment of silence.
Flash forward a decade from the 2016 debut of the original MDR-1000X, and the company is still redefining premium listening.
To celebrate the milestone, Sony Philippines went beyond a traditional product launch, staging an immersive gala on 2 July for the debut of the 1000X THE COLLEXION.
Whitespace Manila shed its familiar industrial character for one evening and transformed into a sophisticated convergence of fashion, technology, and ideas. Bathed in crisp whites and dramatic beams of light, the venue became part luxury runway, part immersive tech showcase, and part keynote stage.
Guests embraced the monochromatic dress code with effortless elegance. Black and white sculptural tailoring, crisp suits, pearls, polished leather, and minimalist accessories made the audience itself part of the visual experience.
Outside, a classic photo wall welcomed attendees, while an immersive photo booth allowed guests to choose animated digital backdrops, turning portraits into futuristic keepsakes.
Guests also explored interactive installations throughout the venue. The Tech Showcase Lounge offered a closer look at Sony's engineering innovations, while the Soundscapes immersive booth paired spatial audio with synchronized visuals, giving attendees a hands-on experience of the headphones' capabilities.
Inside, a pristine white runway stretched toward a stage crowned by the glowing Sony logo as towering LED walls pulsed with monochrome visuals synchronized to the music.
The evening opened with an elegant ballet performance that served as the official product reveal. Sony Philippines President and Managing Director Shuhei Sugihara, together with Marketing Director Kentaro Imamura, then welcomed members of the media, content creators, and industry leaders, outlining the vision behind the next chapter of the 1000X series.
The ballet gave way to a high-octane performance by dance crew A-Team, before the runway was transformed for a fashion presentation styled by avant-garde designer Gian Romano. Models showcased the headphones as statement accessories rather than mere consumer electronics, pairing Sony's sleek design language with architectural black-and-white couture.
For a deeper conversation on the role of sound in everyday life, moderator Rammy Bitong led the "Talk That Talk" panel featuring fashion designer Rajo Laurel, entrepreneur Mika Lagdameo, creative director Daryl Chang, and AGC Power Holdings Corp. Chairman and CEO Archie Carrasco. The discussion explored how audio influences creativity, productivity, and personal expression.
As for the hardware itself, Sony spent two years developing the refined faux leather that cushions the ergonomic, all-day design. Accented with premium metal detailing and available in timeless Black and White finishes, it is a sleek nod to modern luxury.
"More importantly, when I put it on, it doesn't feel uncomfortable. I love the comfort. Even the pouch that comes with it, I honestly use as an evening bag," said Rajo Laurel during the panel.
Unlike many noise-canceling headphones that can feel heavy or uncomfortable after extended use, the 1000X THE COLLEXION remains remarkably light and comfortable. Priced at P36,999, it features deep ear cushions wrapped in proprietary vegan leather engineered to resist facial oils and sweat while enhancing passive acoustic sealing and evenly distributing weight for all-day wear. It is available at Sony Centres and authorized dealers nationwide.
The carrying case itself feels less like conventional tech packaging and more like a minimalist designer clutch, reinforcing Sony's fashion-forward approach.
Carrasco was particularly impressed by the immersive surround sound, explaining how music has always been central to his daily life.
"We have three speakers, so whenever I play music in my house, everybody can listen to it. The big thing is that finally, there is a pair of headphones that lets people experience that same immersive world privately," he said.
The headphones packs a serious punch with a bespoke driver unit, Edge AI-powered DSEE Ultimate, enhanced 360 Reality Audio Upmix, and Sony's signature noise cancellation.
Rather than relying on a conventional product presentation, Sony transformed the launch into an immersive showcase where fashion, technology, and storytelling worked hand in hand. The result was an evening that felt polished, engaging, and every bit as premium as the product itself.
