The Philippine National Police said Wednesday that the suspect in the alleged abuse of an 11-year-old girl in Camarines Sur, who recently wrote to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. seeking help, has been in detention since 2023.

PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said police conducted on-site verification in Barangay Caloco, Tinambac, confirming that a rape case had already been filed and is under trial before a Regional Trial Court. The accused is currently detained at Tinangis Penal Farm. Authorities also looked into reports of harassment, community safety concerns and a separate complaint involving missing electrical drop wires at the barangay level.

In her 30 March letter, the girl alleged rape involving a barangay official’s son and aide, along with threats and harassment against children in their community. She appealed for protection and the chance to continue her schooling safely. President Marcos earlier said the letter “brought me close to tears and made me very angry,” assuring that police would be deployed to protect the victims and investigate those responsible.

The PNP said interviews were conducted with the victim, her family and barangay officials, adding that follow-up operations are ongoing to address concerns involving minors. “We remain committed to thorough investigations, continued coordination with concerned agencies, and swift, appropriate action to protect every member of the community,” Nartatez said.
