Palace backs science-driven peace efforts in former MILF camps

Malacañang has signaled its strong support for a science-based peace initiative in Mindanao, underscoring the government’s policy of using technology to foster normalization in former conflict areas.

Special Assistant to the President Anton Lagdameo Jr. reaffirmed the administration’s commitment during a ceremony for the Department of Science and Technology’s (DoST) project targeting six previously acknowledged Moro Islamic Liberation Front camps.

Lagdameo said the administration remains dedicated to ensuring that peace agreements are protected and expanded for future generations.

The initiative, implemented in Lanao del Sur and Lanao del Norte, is led by DoST Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr. Under a formal agreement signed by the agency and local stakeholders, the government has begun turning over essential technologies to Camps Bushra, Bilal, Badre, Omar, Abubakar and Rajahmuda.

The project addresses basic infrastructure and education through the installation of six solar-powered water systems serving more than 300 households and the deployment of SAFEWATRS water treatment technology.

To bridge the digital divide, officials established STARBOOKS Learning Hubs equipped with Starlink connectivity, providing educational resources to more than 600 students and teachers in the region.

Livelihood interventions have also been integrated into the peace process, with community members receiving training and equipment for food processing, weaving, abaca production and aquaculture.

According to DoST officials, these facilities were designed with disaster risk reduction in mind, utilizing energy-efficient and solar-powered systems to ensure long-term resilience.

Member of Parliament Basit “Jannati Mimbatas” Abbas, chairman of Camp Bushra, said the program has been warmly received by beneficiaries.

He noted that the direct involvement of DoST leadership has helped build trust and strengthen relationships within the communities.

The program is carried out in coordination with the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity.

While initial training sessions took place through late 2025, the government plans to continue mentoring and enterprise strengthening throughout 2026 to ensure the projects remain sustainable.
