Cagayan de Oro City — Tropical storm “Tino,” which has raised Signal No. 1 over Misamis Oriental, prompted the suspension of classes in 17 towns and one city across the province on Monday and Tuesday.
The class suspensions were imposed by local governments from Tagoloan to Magsaysay, as well as Gingoog City, as strong waves battered coastal communities, according to Fernando Dy, head of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.
Towns within the storm surge risk areas include Jasaan, Villanueva, Tagoloan, Balingasag, Balingoan, Libertad and Magsaysay.
While Cagayan de Oro City was not initially included under Signal No. 1, Mayor Rolando Uy announced the suspension of classes for primary and secondary levels, both public and private, starting at 1 p.m. Monday and lasting through Tuesday.
