Tropical Cyclone Tino (international name Kalmaegi) has strengthened into a severe tropical storm while moving across the Philippine Sea, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported Sunday.
In its 5 p.m. bulletin, PAGASA said the storm’s center was 805 kilometers east of Eastern Visayas, carrying maximum sustained winds of 95 kilometers per hour near the center and gusts of up to 115 kph. The storm is moving west at 30 kph.
The weather bureau said Tino may continue to intensify and could reach typhoon category within the next 24 hours. PAGASA added that the possibility of it becoming a super typhoon cannot be ruled out based on current data.
Tino is forecast to move westward and may make landfall in Eastern Samar or Dinagat Islands late Monday evening or early Tuesday morning.
Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 1 is in effect over Eastern Samar, Northern Samar, Biliran, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Camotes Islands, Dinagat Islands, and Surigao del Norte. Heavy rainfall is expected in these areas, while strong winds and storm surges may also affect nearby locations. The northeast monsoon will continue to bring gusty conditions over Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Norte, northern and eastern Cagayan, eastern Isabela, Aurora, Quezon, Lubang Islands, Marinduque, Calaguas Islands, and Caluya Islands.
Local government units have announced the suspension of classes and work in preparation for Tino’s effects.
