The Philippines will make literary history this week as it takes center stage as the Guest of Honour at the 77th Frankfurt Book Fair, marking the country’s first time to hold the prestigious distinction at the world’s oldest and largest book fair.

Running from 15 to 19 October in Frankfurt, Germany, the Philippines’ participation marks a major milestone in its cultural diplomacy. 

While the country has been part of the book fair since 1998, this year’s Guest of Honour status places Filipino creativity and literature in the international spotlight.

The effort to achieve this began a decade ago, spearheaded by Senator Loren Legarda. 

Starting in 2015, Legarda led cultural delegations to Frankfurt, coordinated with key national agencies, and advocated for sustained support for literary diplomacy. 

Her work with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), the National Book Development Board (NBDB), and the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) was instrumental in securing the selection.

“The imagination peoples the air, and we are ready to breathe new life into the world's understanding of what Philippine literature means,” Legarda said, referencing a line from José Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere, which serves as the theme of this year’s Philippine showcase.

As Guest of Honour, the Philippines will present a 2,000-square-metre pavilion designed by Stanley Ruiz, featuring indigenous materials such as kapis, piña, and bamboo. 

The circular layout of the pavilion symbolizes the archipelagic identity of the Philippines and will host a range of literary and cultural programs under six thematic categories: That You May Know Us, What Moves Us, While We Are Away, What Bewitches Us, What We Imagine, and What We Keep and Remember.

The Philippine National Stand will offer thousands of titles available for international rights sales. Meanwhile, the “Jeepney Journey” — a repurposed traditional jeepney — will serve as a mobile cultural space on Frankfurt’s Rossmarkt Square, offering workshops and performances.

Legarda is also scheduled to deliver the keynote address during the fair’s Opening Ceremony, acknowledging her central role in the Philippines’ journey to becoming Guest of Honour.

The Philippine participation also extends beyond books, featuring exhibitions, performances, and film screenings across the city of Frankfurt.

Organizers and cultural officials view the event as an opportunity to reshape global perceptions of the Philippines, moving beyond narratives of resilience to highlight the country’s rich artistic, literary, and imaginative contributions to the world stage. 

The Frankfurt Book Fair is a chance to change that story and show the world a nation that is not only resilient, but also creative, generous, and imaginative.
