Assistant Secretary Paz Benavidez II of the Department of Agriculture has made history as the first Filipino elected chairperson of the United Nations Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (CGRFA), strengthening the country’s leadership in global food security efforts.

Benavidez’s election, during the CGRFA’s 20th session held in Rome, Italy, from 24 to 28 March, highlights the Philippines’ growing influence in shaping international strategies for biodiversity conservation and sustainable food production.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. hailed Benavidez’s appointment as a proud moment for the country and a testament to the Philippines’ impact on international agricultural policy.

“This is a very proud moment for the DA family. Assistant Secretary Benavidez’s election as the first Filipino to head the commission speaks volumes not only of her personal achievements but also the wealth of talent within the DA,” Laurel said.

The commission, a permanent intergovernmental body under the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization, guides policies on the conservation, sustainable use, and equitable sharing of genetic resources vital to global food security.

Benavidez’s two-year term comes at a critical time as nations face challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and food insecurity. Under her leadership, the commission is expected to drive key policies to strengthen global food security and climate resilience.

Founded in 1983, the CGRFA initially focused on plant genetic resources but now addresses all aspects of biodiversity for food and agriculture. With 179 member states and the European Union, the commission plays a pivotal role in shaping sustainable agricultural practices worldwide.
