Chief Justice Alexander G. Gesmundo highlighted the transformative role of arbitration in shaping the future of justice in the Philippines during his keynote address at the 3rd International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Philippines Arbitration Day on 21 February.

The event, held at the Grand Hyatt Manila, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig City, was hosted by ICC Dispute Resolution Services and ICC Philippines. It gathered both local and international legal experts and practitioners to discuss the evolving landscape of arbitration.

Gesmundo described arbitration as a “beacon of innovation within our judicial system” and emphasized its advantages as a faster, more flexible and often more cost-effective alternative to traditional court litigation.

He pointed out that arbitration is an essential tool in enhancing the efficiency and accessibility of the justice system in the country.

He further stressed that the Supreme Court (SC) has been a strong advocate for arbitration and alternative dispute resolution (ADR), recognizing their potential to ease court congestion and provide quicker access to justice.

Over the years, the SC has consistently supported ADR initiatives through several key reforms. Notably, the 2000 Action Program for Judicial Reform and the 2009 Special ADR Rules were cited as foundational efforts to govern arbitration-related court proceedings.

Under the Strategic Plan for Judicial Innovations 2022–2027, the SC has launched a comprehensive review of the Rules of Court to further promote ADR practices.
