Planning a trip to Japan? Be sure to secure your visa early, as the Japanese Embassy in the Philippines has tightened tourist visa slots due to a surge in applications.

According to a report by Kyodo News Plus, the embassy cited an “unprecedented rate” of visa applications following the Covid-19 pandemic, largely driven by the weak yen and a record number of Filipino travelers visiting Japan.

What’s changing?

To manage the high demand, the embassy has begun limiting available visa slots, causing delays in processing times. Travel agencies have also started temporarily suspending visa application services due to the backlog.

In response, Japan is transitioning to a visa center system, aiming to streamline and improve processing efficiency. However, until the system is fully implemented, delays are expected.

Japan remains a top destination for Filipino travelers, with 818,700 visitors recorded in 2024 — a 31.6 percent increase from the previous year. This marks the second consecutive year of record-breaking Filipino tourist arrivals.

How to prepare for your trip

With the new restrictions in place, the embassy advises travelers to apply for their visas at least two months in advance, as both single-entry and multiple-entry visa applications may take several weeks to process.

For those planning cherry blossom season trips or year-end holidays in Japan, it’s best to book appointments and submit documents as early as possible to avoid last-minute disruptions.

While these changes may require extra planning, they highlight the growing enthusiasm of Filipino travelers for exploring Japan’s culture, cuisine, and attractions.
