BAGUIO CITY — Baguio residents who read the traffic advisory of the Baguio City Police expressed disappointment and sentiments particularly that they were told to stay at home to help ease traffic congestion in the city.
In an advisory of the Baguio City Police Office (BCPO) posted on 29 December, the public was encouraged to plan their travels wisely, particularly when heading to the Central Business District (CBD), tourists destinations and main thoroughfares as the city is experiencing a significant influx of tourists. “For non-essential trips, we recommend staying home to help ease traffic congestion,” the advisory said.
One long-time resident said Baguio people have all the right to enjoy the holidays in their own city. “Baguio residents are also hoping to enjoy the city during the holidays, lalo at mahaba haba ung walang pasok. Non-essential travel ba ka ninyo? Eh essential mental health namin,” the netizen said.
“So kami pa ang mag-aadjust? Wow, when can the people of Baguio enjoy the perks of living in our own dwelling place?” expressed another resident. Another one said why should Baguio residents sacrifice their holiday enjoyment in the very city they call home.
She acknowledged that overcrowding, traffic, and pollution are real issues. “But why is the solution to limit the joy of those who live here instead of managing tourists, regulating transportation, parking infrastructures and implementing environmental policies?” she asked. She added that Baguio residents deserve to celebrate Christmas and New Year without being penalized for problems caused by poor planning.
Another Baguio netizen suggested that the city officials encourage or impose a policy that mandates tourist to leave their vehicles at their accommodation and utilize public transport. This is to ensure the income of the drivers of the public utility vehicles of the city.
