TABUK CITY, Kalinga — The provincial government of Kalinga conducted a specialized Suicide First Aid Training workshop at the Davidson Hotel to strengthen regional mental health response capabilities and early suicide prevention, health officials announced.

The program, titled “Gatekeepers Guide to Suicide Prevention and Control,” focused on equipping frontline workers with skills to recognize suicide warning signs, provide immediate crisis assistance, and manage direct referrals to mental health professionals.

Kalinga provincial health officer I Marilyn T. Duyan identified suicide as an escalating public health concern affecting families across the province.

She cited that while community-level personnel regularly encounter individuals experiencing severe emotional distress, many lack formal instruction in risk assessment and initial intervention techniques.

Duyan stressed that training first responders in early crisis identification, supportive care, and streamlined referral networks is critical to reducing suicide rates and elevating overall mental health outcomes in the region.

Resource speakers from the Department of Social Welfare and Development Cordillera regional office led sessions detailing suicide warning indicators, intervention methods and postvention support.

The curriculum featured guidelines on managing the continuum of care, conducting postvention simulations, and providing sustained assistance to communities impacted by loss.

Participants also completed instruction on standard reporting and documentation procedures for incidents of self-harm, attempted suicide and completed suicide under established health protocols.

Instructors underscored practical intervention methods alongside essential self-care strategies to prevent burnout among crisis responders.

Provincial organizers stated that the initiative seeks to build a coordinated network of trained first responders capable of offering active listening, immediate aid, and structured guidance toward professional medical care for individuals at risk.
