Filipino high-net-worth families place a strong emphasis on preserving wealth across generations, but few have formal succession plans or full family alignment, according to a new study by UnionBank Private and Swiss wealth manager Lombard Odier.

The study, titled “The Wealth Blueprint: Building Wealth, Sustaining Legacy,” examined the changing priorities and concerns of more than 390 high-net-worth individuals across the Asia-Pacific region, including clients of UnionBank Private and Lombard Odier’s Strategic Alliances network.

Preserving family wealth across generations

In the Philippines, 80 percent of respondents identified preserving family wealth across generations as their main goal in passing on or receiving wealth. The figure was the highest among the APAC markets surveyed and above the regional average of 64.2 percent.

Maintaining family unity and shared values ranked second, cited by 60 percent of Philippine respondents.

Despite these priorities, only 16.7 percent said they had a full succession plan in place, while just 10 percent said their families were fully aligned.

The study also pointed to concerns over the next generation’s readiness to manage family wealth. Only 14.3 percent of Philippine respondents said they were very confident in the ability of the next generation to handle family wealth, compared with 16.7 percent across APAC.

Major concerns

One in two Philippine respondents cited intergenerational challenges, differing visions for the future and resistance to change among senior family members as major concerns.

The findings suggest that wealth preservation goes beyond investment decisions, with families also needing structures and open discussions to address differences in priorities and prepare for succession.

The study found a link between professional advice and family alignment. Across APAC, 87.5 percent of respondents who receive professional advice said their families have some degree of alignment, compared with 57.8 percent among those who do not receive advice.

Likewise, 50 percent of respondents who do not receive advice identified the absence of a formal structure as a significant challenge in family governance. This compared with 17.2 percent among those who receive professional advice.

Growing need among high-net-worth families for guidance

“The insights from this study highlight a growing need among high-net-worth families for guidance that extends beyond investment management. Through our strategic alliance with Lombard Odier, we are able to better understand our clients’ evolving priorities and support them with tailored solutions that address wealth preservation, succession planning and legacy building.”

“At UnionBank Private, our ultimate goal is to help clients not only grow their wealth but to secure their family’s future and support them as they create a lasting legacy for generations to come,” said Gauraw Srivastava, UnionBank’s head of Wealth Management.

Vincent Magnenat, Limited Partner and Global head of Strategic Alliances at Lombard Odier, said Filipino families and entrepreneurs are showing greater clarity on long-term investment planning and intergenerational wealth transfer, but still face a gap in turning those priorities into structured plans.
