The Philippines convened the ASEAN Defence Senior Officials’ Meeting Working Group in Manila on 30–31 March as part of its role as ASEAN chair for 2026.

The meeting was presided over by Department of National Defense Assistant Secretary Marita Yoro, who chairs the ADSOM and ADSOM-Plus working groups. Discussions focused on the implementation of existing initiatives in maritime security, cybersecurity, humanitarian assistance and disaster response, military medicine, and peacekeeping.

Officials also tackled emerging security concerns, including the protection of critical underwater infrastructure, responses to chemical, biological, and radiological threats, and the impact of emerging technologies.

Yoro emphasized the importance of regional unity amid evolving challenges.

“ASEAN remains the only viable institution that can hold the center, as we are reminded of the importance of sustained and principled dialogue, commitment to peaceful and constructive engagement, and an enduring sense of shared responsibility that should guide our collective efforts,” she said.

The meeting also highlighted preparations for the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting, which marks its 20th anniversary this year, as well as the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia.

As host, the Philippines advanced initiatives aimed at strengthening youth participation in peace and security and enhancing linkages among ASEAN-led defense mechanisms.

Defense officials from ASEAN member states attended the meeting, with bilateral discussions held on the sidelines to further cooperation and exchange views on regional and global security developments.
