Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla said that police investigators have determined that the death of Dueñas, Iloilo Vice Mayor Aimee Paz Lamasan, was caused by an accidental firearm discharge.
In a press conference, Remulla said authorities reached the conclusion after recreating the scene, interviewing witnesses, and examining all aspects of the relationship between Lamasan and her partner, Lord Byron Torrecarion.
“Our conclusion, after the recreation of the scene and events, testimonies of the people there, and examination of all aspects of the relationship, is that it was a death by accidental fire,” Remulla said.
The incident occurred around 8 p.m. on 30 December 2025, while Lamasan and Torrecarion were reportedly talking.
Torrecarion allegedly asked Lamasan if she wanted to add optics to her firearm, which had previously belonged to him before being transferred to her.
Remulla explained that the race gun involved had a very light trigger, and Lamasan allegedly held it improperly, with her thumb on the trigger, causing it to discharge accidentally.
The bullet struck her abdomen, causing extensive internal injuries, and fragments remained inside her body.
According to Remulla, Lamasan was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to her injuries on New Year’s Eve.
“The damage was extensive internally, and bullet fragments were left inside her body,” Remulla said.
