EDSA rehab will be faster via Japanese technology – DPWH

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will begin the rehabilitation of EDSA on 24 December using new technology to make the restoration of the highway faster.

This follows the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to find a quicker and economical solution to repair EDSA without disturbing motorists and commuters.

Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon said that the rehabilitation of EDSA will utilize Japanese technology to ensure that the road is sturdier and more durable.

“The first plan was for two years minimum. The President said that it is not possible. It needs to be short. There needs to be minimal disruption, so the new plan is for eight months instead of two years, using stone mastic asphalt,” said Secretary Dizon.

The government will save up to P11 billion using the technology, now at P6 billion from the original cost of P17 billion.

Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez assured that the EDSA Busway line remains dedicated to faster travel for commuters.

“The President always says that there should always be public transportation. We will ensure that our EDSA Busway has an adequate supply [of buses],” according to the secretary.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, on the other hand, assured that it will deploy more enforcers to ensure smooth traffic flow during the refurbishment of the highway.

“Apart from the additional MMDA personnel, we will also open alternative routes to ensure smooth traffic flow,” Chairman Artes said.

The first phase of EDSA rehabilitation will begin from Roxas Blvd. in Pasay to Orense in Makati next week.
