The “Paskong Makabago, Hudikaturang Makatao” celebration was led by Chief Justice Alexander G. Gesmundo in observance of Christmas at the Supreme Court Old Compound in Manila.
Gesmundo was joined by Senior Associate Justice Marvic M.V.F. Leonen and Associate Justices Ramon Paul L. Hernando, Jose Midas P. Marquez, and Raul B. Villanueva.
In his keynote message, Chief Justice Gesmundo reflected on the significance of Christmas as a time to pause and reaffirm the values of faith, family, friends, and service amid a world of constant change.
“This year’s message carries a special meaning for me,” he shared. “[I]t will be my last Christmas address to you as Chief Justice – sabi nga, walang forever. After serving in the Court since 2017 and with my mandatory retirement fast approaching in less than 12 months, I cannot help but look back with deep gratitude on the remarkable journey we have walked together.”
CJ Gesmundo recalled the difficult moments the Judiciary faced in recent years, particularly during the pandemic, and commended court officials and staff for their resilience, adaptability, and unwavering commitment despite disruptions to work and personal lives.
“Through every hardship, you stood firm with courage and quiet dignity,” he said.
“It is not the challenges that define our story. It is how we rose above them.”
Gesmundo emphasized the significant gains under the Strategic Plan for Judicial Innovations 2022–2027 (SPJI), now on its fourth year. Initially a blueprint for reform, he said the SPJI has become “a living testament to your willingness to grow, to innovate, and to embrace change,” citing key achievements in modernizing court processes, strengthening systems, and improving access to justice.
Reflecting on his time in office, Chief Justice Gesmundo said he consistently sought to prioritize the welfare of the Judiciary’s workforce.
“Every decision, every reform, every difficult call was guided not only by institutional duty, but also by a genuine desire to support you, to ease your burdens where I could, and to honor the dedication you give so selflessly each day.”
As he looks ahead to the coming year, the Chief Justice expressed confidence that the Judiciary will continue to advance under the next generation of leaders.
