The Philippine National Police–Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG) arrested four individuals, including an active-duty police officer, during an anti-smuggling operation in Iligan City.
PNP spokesperson PBGen. Randulf Tuaño said the operatives from the City Highway Patrol Team–Iligan under the Regional Highway Patrol Unit 10 (RHPU 10) were conducting a routine plate-spotting and anti-carnapping operation along the National Highway in Barangay Tubod around 2:30 pm on Sunday when a black Toyota Hilux attempted to evade a checkpoint. A brief chase ensued, culminating in the vehicle’s interception.
A search of the vehicle revealed several boxes of suspected smuggled cigarettes, estimated to be worth P150,000.
Authorities also recovered a Glock 17 Gen 4 9mm pistol bearing PNP markings. One of the four suspects arrested was identified as a police officer currently assigned to Lanao del Norte.
All suspects are now in the custody of Iligan City Police Station 4, where appropriate criminal charges are being prepared.
PNP acting chief Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. praised the swift action of the HPG.
“This operation sends a strong message that the PNP will not tolerate any form of smuggling or the involvement of law enforcers in illegal trade. We are steadfast in upholding the President’s call for integrity and accountability within our ranks,” he said.
Nartatez assured that the PNP will pursue internal disciplinary proceedings against any personnel found to be involved in illicit activities.
