DARAGA, Albay — Two species of snakes were rescued in Barangay Bascaran, Daraga, Albay and were turned over to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)-Bicol through its Conservation and Development Division.
In a social media post on 16 July, a juvenile Northern Philippine Cobra (Naja philippinensis) and two juvenile Northern Triangle-spotted Snakes (Cyclocorus lineatus) were turned over to the DENR for safekeeping.
Mark John Magdato, the resident who reported the snakes, said he immediately coordinated with the DENR to ensure safe turnover.
Upon evaluation, the snakes were found to be in good condition and were immediately released to their natural habitat within the vicinity of Mount Mayon Natural Park.
Both the Northern Philippine Cobra and Northern Triangle-spotted Snake are endemic to the Philippines.
The cobra is listed as an “Other Threatened Species” under DENR Administrative Order No. 2019-09 due to habitat loss and human threats. Though venomous, it helps control pests, while the non-venomous triangle-spotted snake supports forest ecosystem balance.
The DENR-Bicol continues to remind the public that under Republic Act, 9147 or the “Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act,” the handling, possession and trade of wildlife without proper permit is strictly prohibited.
