Senator Loren Legarda joined the country’s annual commemoration of Earth Month this April with a renewed call for urgent climate action, sustainability, and stronger ecological protection.

Known for her long-standing environmental advocacy, Legarda emphasized the need to confront the worsening effects of climate change, which include extreme weather patterns, rising temperatures, and increasing sea levels.

“This April, as we commemorate Earth Month and International Mother Earth Day, we are reminded of our collective responsibility to care for and protect our planet,” Legarda said. “Every small action matters, and every choice we make today affects the future of our children and the generations to come,”

This year’s International Mother Earth Day, observed globally on 22 April, carries the theme “Our Power, Our Planet,” which calls for unified climate action and a shift toward renewable energy. Legarda echoed this theme, underscoring the importance of reaching clean electricity goals by 2030.

She also highlighted landmark environmental laws she authored in the Senate, including the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act (RA 9003), the Climate Change Act of 2009 (RA 9729), and the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act of 2010 (RA 10121), all of which continue to serve as foundational frameworks for the country’s environmental and disaster resilience strategies.

With the country experiencing intense heat this summer, Legarda also urged the public to adopt practical sustainable habits at home.

“This summer, we’re experiencing extreme heat with dangerously high heat indices, making us yearn for cooler, fresher air,” she said. “Let’s help our planet breathe by choosing sustainable options — unplugging unused appliances and, when possible, shifting to solar-powered devices to save energy.”

Legarda continues to advocate for stronger climate policies and increased public awareness, stressing that individual efforts, when multiplied, can lead to meaningful environmental change.
